"Team Saquish" now called Saquish Rowing Education Society, Inc was organized by the late Mike Jenness in 1996
who summered on the peninsula of Saquish with his family which is located in the Town of Plymouth Massachusetts on
Cape Cod Bay and can only be accessed by water or by land via Duxbury Beach with a four wheel drive vehicle.
The club's rowing concept is built on the tradition of the Cornish Pilot gig which originated in the southern part of England
in Cornwall. In the 1800's when ships would arrive to bring in supplies, the first capable person to row out to the ship
would be hired to pilot the ship into port, hence pilot gigs were built for speed, endurance and stability in the sometimes
rough seas, to ensure employment for ship pilots.
The "Gigs" are 32 foot long and just over 4 foot wide and built out of wood. There are six rowers and a coxswain.
Saquish Rowing Club practices rowing most every week all year long, as long as there is access to the water,
and the bay is not frozen over, for recreation and for competitions. We have a Woman's team, Men's team and a
Youth team, high school and middle school. All teams compete in numerous events each year in Massachusetts, Maine,
New York City and have even competed in England and Holland.
We are always looking for new rowers both expert and novice of any age who are willing to compete or just go have some fun
and meet new people.
No experiance is required as we have a very knowledgeable staff and veteran rowers who will be more than happy to teach
you the techniques of rowing these exceptional vessels.
